Since I live in the country, I take a shortcut on back roads to the highway that goes south to Altus (the next town of any size). Today, just a few miles from the house we saw this in the distance. I took these shots about a mile away from it. I didn't want it to dissipate before I got at least one picture. Looks like a tornado, doesn't it? It isn't, this is a heat vortex. Basically, a huge whirlwind cause by heat rising from the ground. It was about 105 according to the temp readout on the car. Impressive, huh?
WHAT IS THAT?
ReplyDeleteUmmm, "this is a heat vortex. Basically, a huge whirlwind cause by heat rising from the ground." . . . . .. . .. just a wild guess !! LOL
ReplyDeletethis is suppose to be the HOTTEST week..............i hope not many of these form........great pic Deb
ReplyDeleteDottie, it is a super-sized dust devil, essentially.
ReplyDeleteAlthough early this morning our weather forecast predicted highs in the lower 90's for tomorrow and maybe the next day, NOW our current forecast says highs at almost 100 tomorrow and the next day. In my area, Chicago, people will die as a result. The media will likely call them the 'elderly' but it's still somebody's parents.
ReplyDeleteI knew this was going to be a very bad summer around here. We had our first 2 days over 100 in March this year. We are now on track to set records for the number of consecutive days over 100 and total number of days over 100. We (western OK and parts of Texas) have not been this hot and dry since the dust bowl. The drought is considered to be in the extreme category. We are starting to see a few heat related deaths, but folks in this part of the country are more used to dealing with even this extreme heat than folks in the north. Be careful up there, Earnest. Anyone can fall victim to the heat, much faster than they realize.
ReplyDeleteNo kidding. Yesterday I was at a nature preserve and took a walk along the paths. It was 97 there and seemed like several degrees more on the paths. I'm a super positive person and ignore whatever the calendar says my age happens to be, BUT after an hour on those paths I knew I didn't have much time left and turned around to go back. I was sweating profusely and was grateful when I got back to our shaded picnic grove. What a difference !!. . . . . One more hour onward with two hours to return and I'd have been the subject the TV show "I Survived", or, I'd have been dead.
ReplyDeleteNow, our hottest temps are due for tomorrow and the next day, with very little relief in the ensuing few days. I'm not going far from the house. Period.
